Mrs LeachJoan Leach was Knutsford's very own resident historian. Joan was born and grew up in Knutsford and had a vast knowledge of local history. Joan not only worked for Knutsford Heritage Centre but was also Honorary Secretary of The Elizabeth Gaskell Society, which she founded. Joan used to have a very busy schedule of talks, guided tours, and other events but took time out to answer questions raised through Virtual-Knutsford. Sadly she passed away on September 30th 2010, aged 77.

Find out more about Joan Leach on her biography page.

 Can you help?

I have had a query from the Netherlands by a gentlean who has been researching, for more than 15 years, the history of the 1st Parachute Battalion training at Ringway and Tatton from 940-42.He asks in particular for photographs of any of the men from that time and of The Cliffe on Toft Road, which, he says, was their headquarters.

Another query from the Netherlands asks whether there were military burials in Knutsford as it is possible that his grandfather, a German Prisoner of War was buried here in 1945/6.

If you have any reminiscences of these times, perhaps had a paratrooper billeted with you, please let me know so that I can pass them on. We should be collecting details of Knutsford in wartime before these memories are lost.
