Casa Tapas – Spanish for Choice

Ah, The White Lion. It was a sticky-floored kind of place. If you haven’t been drunk there and had a fumble up the alley on a Friday night, you haven’t lived. But now all that’s changed. The alley has gone; the nicotine cloud lifted and the beauty of the original 1558 building made clear for all to see.
Readers will know I’m not a fan of tarted-up old pubs. But this isn’t a modernisation; it’s a careful and considered restoration. The work has taken 7 months and been done in sympathy with this, one of Knutsford’s oldest buildings.
All credit then to two Spanish brothers – Abbi and Baman Mancini - who have been running a successful Tapas Bar in Didsbury for the last 14 years. They’ve skilfully made use of boarded-up spaces, exposing original beams and brick walls. They’ve created a mezzanine level from the landlady’s flat and turned an old bottle store into a romantic barn with a stunning glass-wall feature. The charm and character were already there, but these guys knew how to bring it out.

There was no need to get dressed up for the White Lion. But now there is. Every reason. For Casa Tapas is somewhere you would actually want to be seen. The night I went it was balmy and peopled with glamorous couples, attractive singles and families alike. Sitting outside was the Mayor! I like that it gives you a choice. Choose a cosy corner or an airy terrace. Choose a velvet armchair or a church pew. Choose to be intimate or sociable. The place is unashamedly glamorous, with chaises longues, ornate mirrors, wrought iron railings and even an old piano inherited from the pub. It has passion and it works.

Or course Tapas is a relaxed way to eat, with a choice of small dishes sampling the best Mediterranean flavours – lots of seafood and veggie options. Perfect for sharing – especially if yours is the bigger appetite! Ideal too for girls who only want a nibble. The menu is big enough to be different each

time you go. And if you want amore traditional meal, go a la Carte with the South American Charcoal Grill – a healthy alternative with a choice of sauces and side orders. There’s also a children’s menu and banquets for parties of 3 or more.
Sadly, I am only one person and there’s a limit to the number of Tapas I could taste, but the ones I tried were all freshly prepared and satisfying. Especially the paella which, even in Spain can be overcooked. This one was moist and loaded with meat. Portions were more than generous and

the staff attentive and friendly. The champagne wasn’t bad either. If you eat out regularly in Knutsford and you’re in a rut, then, this could be just the change you need, adding Spain to our choice of gourmet destinations. I’m certainly going back for more. |
