Winstanley
House was a home for boys - waifs and strays - founded in 1814 by
Claude Hardy in memory of Emmeline Winstanley. It housed 45 boys.
I do not know who Emmeline Winstanley was but Claude Hardy was wealthy
enough to build Radbroke Hall around the same time.
Winstanley House was converted from the closed down Grammar School
which had been purpose built in 1887 to cater for 50 day boys and
25 boarders. It had a six acre field with cricket pitch etc.
Today the Old Folks Home called Winstanley House on Tabley Road
occupies the site of the old one but is a new building.
