My mother was born
at Manchester Road in 1926 and her father , Charles Walter Henry
Smith was a teacher at Egerton Boys School before and after the
Great War. I was in touch with someone a while back, who was looking
at the school record books. Are you able to advise where these
might be held? Are you also able to supply any information about
the school - does it still exist?
Joan answers:
Egerton
Schools Knutsford - boys and girls were separate establishments
but shared the building on Church Hill - were opening in 1893.

I intend to complete a history of schools in the town and have
research notes ready; from these I can tell you that the log book
noted for 31.3.1941:
'Mr CWH Smith, after 31 years of service ceased to be employed as
an assistant teacher at 4.00pm. He is appointed Head Master of Great
Crosby C of E Junior School'.
Looking back in an earlier log book, still owned by Egerton School,
I find under 16 August 1910:
'Mr CWH Smith commenced duties as assistant
teacher'.
His teacher's registration number was 19/6147 which might lead
you to official government records. There must be men in the town
today who still remember him. Let me know if you need the entry
for him in the 1891 census.
